Michael D. Twa, OD, PHD, FAAO, has been selected for the position of Dean at UHCO. Dr. Twa joins the College from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he serves as associate dean for research and graduate studies for the School of Optometry. Dr. Twa is expected to begin his duties on June 1, 2019. Welcome, Dr. Twa!
Dr. Twa has been involved in teaching, research, and clinical practice for more than 25 years. He grew up in a family of engineers and healthcare providers so, "I am passionate about new programs and infrastructure from the ground up and tackling technical challenges, however, my overarching commitment to serving others is what drove me to become a healthcare provider."
Research interests include biomedical imaging, soft tissue biomechanics, and glaucoma. Over the past 10 years his work has focused on developing a new diagnostic imaging technology for use in the eye–optical coherence elastography. The goal of this work is to advance our understanding of tissue biomechanics and understand how structural degenerations influence health and function of the eye in glaucoma, keratoconus and other diseases.
