UHCO presents at APHA
Jennifer Deakins, OD,’10, Susana Moreno, OD, ’14, Dan Powell, OD, MS, PhD, and Pat Segu, OD, ’92, presented posters at the American Public Health Association-Vision Care Section (APHA) at the Annual Vision Care Section Eye Opener & Award Ceremony this November. The APHA-Vision Care was established to promote health and well-being with an emphasis on vision and eye health through interdisciplinary partnerships. The Section serves as an advocate to ensure equality in and access to vision and eye health care as well as to ensure inclusion of vision in public health policy.

UHCO student receives APHA VCS 2016 award
Mylan Nguyen, Class of 2018, was awarded the Morton W. Silverman Outstanding Student Paper Award by the American Public Health Association-Vision Care Section at the annual Vision Care Section Eye Opener & Award Ceremony this November.

The Morton W. Silverman Outstanding Student-Paper (Project) Award, sponsored by HOYA Vision Care, recognizes a student or group of students that has contributed significantly to the advancement of eye/vision care in the public health field from the perspective of a student in optometry, medicine, public health or related health professions programs. The contribution may be a paper previously published, suitable for publication or a detailed written description of a project. The paper or project must represent work that has occurred while the student(s) is/are enrolled in a professional program, although the award may be conferred after graduation. Congratulations, Mylan!

BrightFocus Foundation to visit UHCO

BrightFocus Foundation to visit UHCO
UHCO welcomes the BrightFocus Foundation on Friday, October 28, 2016. The BrightFocus Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports research and provides public education on brain and eye diseases. The Foundation is touring Drs. Deborah Otteson and Vijay Krishna Raghunathan’s research labs and will meet with other Houston area researchers that the foundation has funded in the fields of Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dr. Jan Bergmanson featured in 'Top 30 in Contact Lenses'
Jan Bergmanson, O.D., Ph.D., FAAO, was featured in the September 2016 issue of Contact Lens Spectrum as one of the Top 30 in Contact Lenses. Click here to read full article and few other honorees.  

As a clinician anatomist and pathologist with more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Bergmanson has had the privilege to inform clinicians and physiologists of the exact structure that a contact lens is placed upon and the consequences of the contact lens presence on the eye. Occasionally, he has had to correct flawed anatomical assumptions when interpreting a clinical manifestation, as was the case with polymegethism.

James Dienst, OD, '89, promoted to Brigadier General
Brigadier General James H. Dienst, OD, '89, is the first general officer in U.S. Air Force Optometry history. He is one of the U.S. Air Force’s most accomplished leaders in military healthcare, Dienst has served in a broad range of leadership, clinic, and staff positions over the past 21 years. Highlighting the rarity of Dienst’s promotion to one-star, only one colonel was chosen out of hundreds considered.

UHCO Vendor Expo
UHCO hosted their first Annual Vendor Expo, Saturday, September 29. The event was a great success. Faculty, staff, students and alumni were able to visit with over 15 companies about the latest trends and technology. A huge thanks goes out to our corporate partners: Alcon, Allergan, Bausch & Lomb, CooperVision, Essilor, Guardian Life Insurance, HM General Contractors, HOYA, Johnson &Johnson, Marchon, nJoy Vision, Optovue, UHCo Surgery Center, FERV and Xite Realty.
 
American Diabetes Association's Houston EXPO

American Diabetes Association's Houston EXPO
The American Diabetes Association's Houston EXPO included health screenings, cooking demonstrations, information and resources from exhibitors, as well as leading experts talking about diabetes management and prevention.
 
The University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO) provided vision screenings, which included intraocular pressure, and fundus screenings for diabetic retinopathy.  Drs. Pat Segu, Naomi Chun, Marsha Thomas, Susana Moreno and members of the UHCO - Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity Organization (SVOSH), assisted with patient education and performed the screenings. Close to 100 vision screenings were administered by our SVOSH/UHCO volunteers. Healthier vision through education is another way UHCO is Enhancing Vision for Life.

Last month, optometry packed Anderson Fair for fun and music to support UHCO scholarships. Alumni, students and freinds enjoyed performances by Shake Russell and Michael Herne. 6th Annual Mayor's Back to School Fest
On August 13, the University of Houston welcomed over 20,000 students and their parents to the 6th Annual Mayor’s Back to School Fest. This event is a great opportunity for students grades K-5 and their families to experience an array of resources, in the Greater Houston community, to prepare students for the upcoming school year.
 
The University of Houston’s College of Optometry (UHCO), the City of Houston’s Health and Human Services Department, Eye Care for Kids, and Prevent Blindness Texas provided vision screenings to these school-age children.
Two Professorships Added to UHCO

Two Professorships Added to UHCO
The most useful tool a College and University has for populating classrooms, laboratories and clinics with exemplary instructors and scholars is named professorships. UHCO announced on July 14, that Jan Bergmanson OD, PhD, FAAO, would hold the first Brien Holden Professorship and Vallabh Das, PhD, would hold the Benedict-Pitts Professorship.

The Brien A. Holden Professorship Endowment will support a faculty member at UHCO who exemplifies the commitment to the profession and the ideals Professor Holden championed throughout his lifetime with regard to vision  science and innovation  and are still being carried out today via the Brien Holden Vision Research Institute.

The Benedict-Pitts Professorship Endowment will support a faculty member at UHCO who exemplifies the commitment to practice management and the ideals Mr. Benedict and Dr. Pitts demonstrated for the optometric profession in all facets.
