At the University of Houston College of Optometry, our vision is to continue being a leader in education, vision research and patient care. Since 1952 we have continually grown and innovated to meet the demands of the ever changing health care marketplace. We provide the citizens of the greater Houston region with world renowned researchers, vision scientists and clinicians in perhaps the best optometric educational facility in the world. UHCO is comprised of the University Eye Institute (UEI), the Molly and Doug Barnes Vision Institute, and five community clinics throughout Texas. The UEI provides a wide range of eye care services and products from comprehensive vision examinations to the medical and surgical management of eye disorders. The UEI is conveniently located just south of downtown on the University of Houston campus.
UHCO is affiliated with five community health care clinics in Texas; La Nueva Casa de Amigos Eye Clinic, San Jose Eye Clinic, Good Neighbor Clinic, all located in Houston, the Cedar Springs Eye Clinic located in Dallas and the Community Eye Clinic in Fort Worth. Soon HOPE clinic will be joining our group of affiliated community health care clinics in the Houston area. HOPE clinic will be located near Bellaire Blvd. and the Sam Houston Pkwy. These facilities provide a range of services, including comprehensive eye examinations as well as diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders at a reduced cost to thousands within the Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth communities.
The people of Houston were the inspiration for the UHCO Mobile Eye Institute (MEI) so we could better serve our greater Houston community. The MEI is equipped with the latest in ophthalmic technology and provides on-site comprehensive eye care to patients who don’t have access to more traditional health care services and are unable to travel to the UEI or one of our neighborhood clinics.
The Surgery Center is one of the more recent additions to our health care services where patients may receive ophthalmic surgical care utilizing the most experienced eye surgeons from the greater Houston region combined with the latest technology. This state-of-the-art facility is one of the first locations in Houston to incorporate the FDA approved LenSx® laser which utilizes bladeless technology. By incorporating this technology, surgeons are able to achieve a high degree of precision for cataract and refractive procedures.
We recently partnered with nJoy Vision for advanced laser procedures within our laser suite located on the first floor of the Health and Biomedical Science Building and adjacent to our surgery center. We are excited to offer a superior vision correction facility that will not only provide for the needs of our community at large as well as serve the university community. Our students will receive training in cutting edge refractive options and advanced treatment options for Keratoconus. This co-management focused center will offer patients a range of services including LASIK, PRK and Visian ICL treatments, advanced treatment options for Keratoconus, including corneal cross-linking, Intacs and IEK and educational services for refractive lens exchange and refractive cataract surgery.
These facilities, coupled with our esteemed scientists, clinicians and high caliber students create an environment not found at another optometry school or university setting. Step through the doors of UHCO and experience the difference we are making today and the breakthroughs we are discovering for tomorrow!
