The University of Houston College of Optometry honored members of its community for their outstanding contributions in teaching, service, leadership, and student impact during the second annual Leadership Awards Ceremony, held Friday, April 25.

Michael Twa, Dean of the UH College of Optometry, presented the awards following opening remarks that reflected on a year of academic achievement, clinical excellence, and continued progress in advancing the College’s mission.

The College’s highest instructional honor, the Cora and J. Davis Armistead Teaching Excellence Award, was presented to Dr. Joe Wheat. Given annually at the college’s awards ceremony, the award recognizes sustained excellence in teaching at the University of Houston College of Optometry and the University Eye Institute. Recipients are selected based on their originality in teaching, national reputation, and the long-term impact of their contributions to optometric education. Dr. Wheat’s work exemplifies the highest standards of teaching and mentorship in the field.

The Beta Sigma Kappa Awards honored two faculty members for their excellence in lecture and clinical education:

  • Dr. Danica Marrelli, Assistant Dean for Clinical Education – Outstanding Lecture Faculty Award
  • Dr. Justin SimbulanOutstanding Clinical Faculty Award

Doctor of Optometry students selected the following faculty members as recipients of the 2024–25 Teaching and Educational Excellence Awards, honoring outstanding instruction and clinical mentorship throughout the curriculum:

  • Jason MarsackOutstanding Teaching Award – Optometry I
  • Dr. Amber GaumeOutstanding Teaching Award – Optometry II
  • Dr. Danica MarrelliOutstanding Clinic Faculty Award – Optometry III
  • Dr. Samantha WangOutstanding Clinic Faculty Award – Optometry III
  • Dr. Jennifer TascaOutstanding Clinic Faculty Award – Optometry IV

Several staff members were recognized for their dedication and contributions to the success of the College:

The Student Leadership Award was presented to Jackson Dolce, a fourth-year student recognized for their leadership, involvement in campus and community life, positive impact on peers, and commitment to professional development.
