Biography

Dr. Laura J. Frishman has been a member of the University of Houston College of Optometry faculty since 1990 and currently serves as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research. She earned her undergraduate degree from Vassar College, followed by a Master of Science and Ph.D. in physiological psychology /neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh. She then completed postdoctoral training in visual neuroscience at Northwestern University and the University of California, San Francisco, where she also held a faculty research position.

Her research has advanced the field of visual science through the development and refinement of noninvasive electrophysiological methods to assess retinal and visual pathway function. These approaches have improved understanding of visual processing in both healthy individuals and those affected by inherited or acquired disorders.

Alongside her research, Dr. Frishman is a dedicated educator and mentor. She teaches in both professional and graduate programs and has guided numerous students who are now contributing to the fields of optometry and visual science as clinicians and researchers.

Dr. Frishman’s leadership also extends beyond the classroom and laboratory. She is currently Associate Editor for Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, serves on the editorial board of Translational Vision Science & Technology, and is an Academic Editor for PloS One. She has previously served as Editor-in-Chief of Visual Neuroscience and Documenta Ophthalmologica. She has also contributed nationally and internationally through service on grant review panels, the NIH/NEI National Advisory Eye Council, and the Board of Directors of the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV).

In recognition of her scholarship and professional service, Dr. Frishman has been named a Fellow of both the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (FARVO) and the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). Through her research, editorial leadership, and mentorship, she continues to shape the field of visual science and inspire the next generation of researchers and clinicians.
