The University Eye Institute Brain Injury Vision Assessment & Rehabilitation Service offers specialized evaluation and management of visual deficits resulting from concussion as well as mild, moderate, and severe acquired brain injury caused by accidents, strokes, brain tumor resections, and other neurologic disorders.
Our team of attending doctors, residents, and students are skilled at assessing the functional vision status as well as the eye health of brain injury and neurologically compromised patients that are verbal, nonverbal, or aphasic. 
 A person with a brain injury is likely to have some degree of visual difficulty as the eye is a direct extension of the brain. A large percentage of what we perceive is through the visual system and, therefore, the rehabilitation of vision with the brain injury patient is critical to their recovery of function.
Ocular/visual problems associated with brain injury may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Squinting and/or closing an eye(s)
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Focusing difficulties
  • Reading difficulties
  • Central vision loss
  • Peripheral vision loss
  • Visual-spatial neglect
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Nystagmus (involuntary eye movements)
  • Staring behavior (low blink rate)
  • Dry eyes
  • Damage to the retina and/or optic nerves

Rehabilitation of the visual system may include: glasses, prism, filters, occlusion, vision therapy, compensatory strategies, and/or low vision devices. 
For some patients, surgical intervention for eye misalignment may become necessary in which case we have an ophthalmologist who specializes in strabismus surgery available for consultation.
