Charles “C.J.” Dale, a third year optometry student enrolled in the O.D./M.S. program at the University of Houston College of Optometry, is the recipient of the 2020 VCS Distinguished Student Service Award for his contributions to vision care and public health.
The Vision Care Section (VCS) Awards Committee of the American Public Health Association (APHA) made the announcement in advance of their upcoming APHA Virtual Annual Meeting. C.J. will receive a plaque, a complimentary one-year APHA membership and conference registration to this year's APHA Virtual Annual Meeting slated for October 2020.
The Distinguished Student Service Award is presented to a student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program who has made an outstanding contribution or demonstrated continual high quality service in the area of public health eye/vision care. An epidemiologist, C.J. returned to the field with Harris County Public Health to help with their COVID-19 contact tracing efforts and the role of optometry in relation to chronic disease.
