Social activities abound. Each semester several events are planned for students and faculty to socialize, as well as unwind from the busy school year. In the fall, there is a howling Halloween party, Bingo Night where faculty and students try their luck, World Sight Day Talent Show, Thankful Thursday's and of course, a Holiday Ugly Sweater Contest.
The spring semester brings a fun-filled day of competition called the Cornealympics, a formal Annual Spring Awards Banquet where faculty and students get all gussied up, STOA Softball Tournament and a Doubles Vision tennis tournament. Then there is the occasional karaoke night for those who like to sing and for those who think they can.
Undergraduate students at UH with an interest in optometry are encouraged to join the Pre-Optometry Professional Society (UH-POPS). UH-POPS supplies its members with information and opportunities to learn about the profession of optometry. Local members meet regularly to maintain a dialog with the College of Optometry administration, students, and staff of the Office of Optometry Relations. POPS chapters have also been established at other universities throughout the country.
Several professional societies are available for student membership. These professional organizations, registered by UH, offer tremendous opportunities to travel to meetings, participate in vision screenings locally as well as internationally and, of course, experience the camaraderie.
Sports activities enjoyed at UHCO include basketball, tennis, softball, volleyball and golf. The Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, located next door to UHCO, provides students access to swimming, running, aerobic classes, exercise equipment, racquetball and even a rock wall! Student membership for the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center is included in UHCO tuition.
