Dr. Larry Alexander Scholarship

Sponsored in part by Optovue, a $2,500 grant has been established to honor the late Dr. Larry J. Alexander. Dr. Alexander was a mentor and friend to many and a leader in optometry. He was dedicated to his work as an educator through lectures and publications. His impact on optometry is only surpassed by his kindness and his commitment to helping others.

To be eligible for the Dr. Larry J. Alexander Scholarship for Education, a student must:

  • Be a third-year student member (class of 2019) in good standing in the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) and the AOA;
  • Be a student in good academic standing;
  • The student must demonstrate financial need as defined by their Financial Aid Office.
  • Submit a paper, written in English, not to exceed 1,000 words addressing the following question:

Topic to Address:
Dr. Alexander believed in “paying it forward” and helping others. How have you helped others before or during optometry school and how will your professional optometric practice help the needy in your community?

  • Materials are to be submitted to the designee by the school-established date.  Each school and college will choose one candidate from all applications received by their on-campus deadline. Each school must forward the individual’s name and essay to Optometry Cares® . One overall recipient will be selected from all applications received.  The winner will be announced in January 2018.
