Smith-Wensveen Fellowship Endowment

Established July 28, 2009 by Drs. Earl Smith and Janice Wensveen. Earl L. Smith, III has spent his academic life at the University of Houston College of Optometry. He received a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry Degree in 1972, a Master of Science in 1975, and a Ph.D in 1978, all from UHCO. In addition, in 1978, he completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship then joined the faculty. In August 2001, he became Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, and in August 2003 became Dean. He is the recipient of the prestigious Glenn Fry Award from the American Academy of Optometry, a recipient of the UH Amoco Teaching Excellence Award, and was selected in 2003 by the Texas Optometric Association as its Educator of the Year. In 2009, he received the Optometrist of the Year Award from the Texas Optometric Association.

Janice M. Wensveen, a native of Canada, received her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 1983 and her Ph.D. in Physiological Optics from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 1998. She is a Clinical Associate Professor at UHCO where she teaches binocular vision in class, labs, and in the clinic. She also works with patients to help them overcome binocular vision anomalies in the Family Practice Vision Service.  

Criteria:

  • Provide fellowships for an incoming OPT I student in the College of Optometry.
  • The fellowship is renewable if criteria for renewal are met each year.
  • Fellowship applicant(s) exhibits distinguished academics and demonstrates leadership qualities as determined by the College of Optometry Scholarship Committee.
  • Fellowship recipient(s) may accept other fellowships and grants in conjunction with the Smith-Wensveen Fellowship.
  • Recipient must be in good academic standing and meet UHCO eligibility requirements. 
  • Selection is made by the College of Optometry Scholarship Committee.
