Mikela D. Kwan Scholarship Endowment

The Mikela D. Kwan Scholarship Endowment was established by her parents, Richard and Shirley Woo Kwan and siblings Roderick Kwan, Georgianna Kwan, and Kermit Kwan, in loving memory of their beloved daughter and sister. Born in 1965, Mikela attended the University of Mississippi and graduated with a degree in biology. She chose the highly recommended University of Houston College of Optometry where she attended from 1987 to 1991. Mikela graduated with her OD in May 1991. Following graduation, she established a successful practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she was a dedicated optometrist who extended herself to her patients, her community, and to her profession. Since Mikela was such a strong advocate for social well being, professional political participation, and philanthropy, it is with great honor that the Kwan family can provide a scholarship for a promising student in Optometry that will assist them in achieving their full potential in the optometry profession. Although Mikela passed away in 2006, her legacy will live in perpetuity through the lives of future generations of optometrists touched by this scholarship endowment.
