Dr. Nelson Reber Eye Open Award

Established in 1993 and modified in September, 2016, Nelson J. Reber, OD, University of Houston Professor Emeritus, died October 19, 2011.  He taught at the University of Houston College of Optometry for 36 years, and was a member of the Academy of Optometry, American Optometric Association and Texas Optometric Association.  He founded the Eye Open Golf Tournament to provide scholarships and student loans, was the first optometric advisor to the Texas State Commission for the Blind, and served the mental health and retardation community from 1968 until his death.

Criteria:

  • This scholarship is to fund an OPT II or OPT III student at the College of Optometry.
  • Recipients of this award must have a GPA of a 2.5 or better.
  • Recipients must be involved in activities inside UHCO and participate in community service other than what is required by the UHCO. 
  • Recipient must be in good academic standing and meet UHCO eligibility requirements. 
  • Selection is made by the College of Optometry Scholarship Committee.
