College students who apply for the TEXOCOP summer program complete an application form and furnish demographic information, academic history (including transcripts), and whether or not one or more parent is a college graduate. They submit two essays: a biographical sketch and a essay describing their interest in optometry as a career. All applicants must have completed 75% of the prerequisite course work and have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Parent's adjusted gross income is reviewed along with any information about scholarships or financial aid received.
Admission decisions are based upon each applicant meeting several criteria: the minimum overall GPA, number of completed prerequisite courses, whether or not they have completed courses appropriate for the OAT review (physics, chemistry, biology, math), status as per Health Career Opportunities Program (HCOP) guidelines for being academically and economically disadvantaged, and level of motivation for a career in optometry. Essays submitted with the application are reviewed and rated. Applications for TEXOCOP are reviewed by the three member admission committee: academic coordinator, program administrator, and a faculty member from the UHCO Professional Program Admission Committee.
