OD Referral Service at the UEI
As a service to our alumni, we would like to remind you of the valuable resources at the University Eye Institute. The OD/Med Service utilizes innovative imaging technologies to better define normal and pathologic eye structure and function. This Service has both optical and non-optical technology such as:
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT) produces high-resolution cross-sectional images of the retina. This instrument is useful in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, retinal, and neuro-ophthalmic diseases. In addition to retinal OCT, anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) can provide high-resolution images of the angle comparable to those obtained with ultrasound biomicroscopy. The new AS-OCT technology is very useful as a diagnostic tool for glaucoma and also has several applications in refractive surgery.
- Heidelberg retina tomography (HRT) captures coronal sections of the optic nerve, creating a topographic map of its structure. This technology is useful in the detection and management of glaucoma.
- Scanning laser polarimetry (GDxVCC) exploits tissue birefringence to probe both the physical structure and the metabolic state of target tissues. Since axons of the retinal ganglion cells are birefringent, the signal in retinal tissue serves as a clinically useful and early detector of glaucoma development.
- Frequency doubling technology (FDT) and short wavelength perimetry (SWAP) are used in the early detection of glaucoma. Studies indicate that both tests may show abnormalities years before they can be detected by conventional means.
- Electrophysiology measures the function of eye tissues independent of patient responses and descriptions. By measuring retinal activity and brain waves and their response to images, one can further investigate the function of the healthy eye, the visual brain, and their pathologies. Multifocal ERG’s and VEP’s are available by special appointment.
In addition to the procedures listed above, your patients can also benefit from the following tests and instrumentation such as:
- corneal topography
- ocular cultures
- confocal microscopy
- ultrasonography
- pachymetry
- fluorescein angiography
- internal and external digital photography
We also perform:
- selective laser trabeculoplasties (SLT)
- peripheral iridotomies
- laser capsulotomies
- argon laser surgery for retinal vascular disorders
And, last but not least, we off sub-specialty consults for:
- glaucoma
- neuro-ophthalmology
- oculoplastics
- retina
- pediatrics
- cornea/external disease
Although described elsewhere on this web site in greater detail, we’d like to remind you that we can assist you with:
- complex contact lens fittings
- sports vision
- vision therapy
- developmental vision
- low vision assessments / rehabilitation
